DD Meets Barack Obama And Time Magazine Captures The Picture
I know it’s been racking your brain for months…
What does DD look like?
For those of you who’d like to take the next step in our relationship and turn into full fledged stalkers, today is your lucky day!
Actually you’re only in luck if you have the 11-17-08 issue of Time Magazine. If you do you can look at page 53 and see yours truly and my kids chatting it up with then Senator Obama.
For those of you who are frugal and get your Time fix at your local library, you can just click here.
The story behind the picture is that it was taken after an Obama campaign event during the primary season. He held a speech about a block away from my house, then took a stroll. During this stroll he was talking on his cell while walking across the street from our house. I thought that was as close as we’d get, but my 3 yr old took action into her own hands.
“Hey, Obama! Hey, Obama!”
I’d like to think we didn’t raise her to think it is polite to just shout out someone’s last name at them to get their attention. But if you’re a cute little girl and the person you’re yelling at is a candidate for political office, I think it’s OK.
He made a bee-line and chatted up my little girl for about a minute before talking to me. We exchanged pleasantries and he went on his way. It was a very cool moment.
Imagine my surprise when six months later I’m sitting in my living room, flipping through my copy of Time and low and behold I get to relive the moment again right before my eyes (My wife said she thought we won the lottery I became so excited).
This isn’t really related to personal finance. I guess I could suggest the idea of if you ever want a cheap thrill, try to have your picture appear in a national news magazine without you knowing it and then discover it yourself while flipping though it.
Let me tell you, you get quite a charge!
Until next time,
DD
One word; awesome.
Oh wow! The story of your daughter calling him over is so funny. What a great photo!
Wow-you actually got to meet him-And he came to your house. Frame it! (I always pictured you with a mustache)
What a great picture. This is something your daughter will remember forever. In 2000 John McCain was passing through the neighbor and my nephew was having a birthday party. He stopped and took pictures with the kids and talked to the adults. The kid still talk about that to this day.
What an incredible story and picture! That’ll be something you’ll remember and talk about for the rest of your life. Very cool.
Did he touch you and all of your illnesses went away?
In the picture, he looks like he is reaching to the inside pocket of his jacket. Was he reaching to get his checkbook and write you a BIG taxpayer check?
…I’m bitter.
Very cool. What a couple of cuties you have there. I pictured you fatter. lmao. It’s funny.. you don’t realize you have images of people in your mind until you realize you were totally wrong.
I have to say that while I always enjoy the comments my posts get, these were by far the most entertaining.
@jacquelin – We are working on getting personal reprint rights to this image. But since it’s not something they normally do, it might take a while.
A mustache huh? I did have a soul patch once…
@Amber C – What a cool story! It’s great that the kids remember it. I’m not so sure my daughter will remember much about this meeting, thats why I’m glad the picture popped up.
@ Ed – HA!
He did touch us. And while I don’t know if any illnesses were cured, it was only a few days later that I stumbled upon The Happy Rock. I’ve never thought about it before, but maybe this was no coincidence?
@ Ashley – Thank you, I do have a couple of cuties. And you were probably picturing the future DD. There are no thin people in my family, so I figure it’s just a matter of time.
Although maybe I’ll fend it off long since I’m fairly active.
You should have asked him some question about tax policy or something. If you had, maybe we’d have heard about John the Debt Defier throughout the last month instead of Joe the Plumber!
Frame and display it. He could become one of the best presidents ever and you can tell your grandkids – “I gave some advice (insert something smart here)”
Wow DD, that’s awesome! Not many people have a candid shot like that of themselves with the President. This will be something your kids will even cherish 50-60 years down the road…
If I were you, I’d contact the newspaper and try to get a larger print!
You know that our household thought you were cool back when we first heard the story, but now you’re just plain out awesome! Of course (sorry DD) it’s those two cuties who rule in the conversations around here. The kids were so excited that they’ve gone to school and told all of their friends about the pic of the little DD’s.
Wow!!! What a picture
There is a lot of warmth and happiness radiating from that..
I agree with what someone has said before-This is something for posterity
Dear DD,
I just started to subscribe to the Happy Rock and am reading some older posts. I think this is a wonderful story and the picture makes it ever so much better. I like what I am reading so far! Great posts from you, the Rock and the guest PF bloggers.
A new fan of The Happy Rock,
Ro
@ Ro –
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you like what you’re reading.
We still haven’t done anything with the picture yet. My wife is a photographer, so I always let her handle all photo related issues.
Hopefully we’ll have it displayed while he’s still president 🙂
